Faux leather vs real leather harness: what changes and how to care for each

Our harnesses are PU faux leather or elastic, not animal hide. Here is what that changes in wear and care, and what real leather would need instead.

A faux leather harness is a polyurethane (PU) surface bonded to a woven fabric backing. It is light, needs no breaking in and is cleaned by wiping. A real leather harness is animal hide: heavier, stiffer at first, and it needs conditioning to stay supple. The harnesses sold here are faux leather or elastic; the real leather notes below are general care information, not a description of our products.

Styling and outfit pairing are covered in the leather lingerie styling guide. This page stays on material and upkeep.

How each material is built

PU faux leather

Product pages describe our straps as PU faux leather over a woven fabric backing. The PU layer gives the matte or glossy surface; the woven backing carries the load so the strap does not stretch out of shape. Hardware on these pieces is zinc alloy with a plated finish, gold-tone or silver-tone. The body harness below is a typical build.

Elastic strap sets

These are a different material again: 85% polyester and 15% elastane, which is what gives the stretch recovery, with zinc alloy rings and sliders. The cage set below is an example.

Real leather

Tanned animal hide. It has no backing fabric, it absorbs moisture, and it softens and darkens with wear.

Cleaning each material

Faux leather

Wipe the straps with a cloth dampened in cool water and, if needed, a little mild soap. Dry with a clean cloth. Do not machine wash, soak or tumble dry a PU piece: the heat and agitation separate the surface from its backing. Do not use leather conditioner, oil or polish on faux leather; there is nothing for it to feed and it leaves a film.

Elastic strap sets

The care instructions on the elastic cage set above are the rule for all stretch sets: hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent, no bleach and no fabric softener. Squeeze the water out without twisting the straps and lay the set flat to dry away from direct sunlight. Twisting and heat are what shorten the life of the elastic.

Real leather (general)

If you own a real leather harness from elsewhere, the rules are different. Wipe it dry rather than wet, let it air if it got damp, and apply a leather conditioner now and then so the hide does not dry and crack. Keep it out of plastic bags; hide needs air. None of this applies to the PU and elastic pieces sold here.

Hardware and storage

  • The zinc alloy hardware has a plated finish that resists tarnishing; moisture is what eventually dulls it. Dry the rings after washing an elastic set and never store a harness damp.
  • Keep perfume and body sprays off the rings; they sit on the plating. If a ring loses shine, a soft dry cloth is enough. Abrasive cleaners remove the plating.
  • Faux leather cracks along fold lines. Store a PU harness hanging or lying flat rather than folded into a small pouch, away from radiators and sunlight.
  • Elastic sets can be folded loosely; keep them away from sharp buckles that could snag the bands.

Frequently asked questions

Are these harnesses real leather or faux leather?

The leather-look pieces are PU faux leather on a woven backing; no animal hide. Stretch sets are polyester and elastane.

Can I put a faux leather or elastic harness in the washing machine?

No. Wipe faux leather with a damp cloth; hand wash elastic sets in cold water and dry them flat.

How do I stop faux leather straps from cracking?

Do not store them folded, and keep them away from heat and sunlight. Hang them or lay them flat.

Does the gold-tone hardware tarnish?

The zinc alloy plating resists it, but repeated moisture dulls it. Dry the rings after washing and store the piece dry.

For fit, the size guide gives the measurements; the body harness and harness set categories list the material of each piece on its product page.
